Make sure the child's ear is enclosed inside the space in the ear cup and that the cushions seal fully against the head around the full perimeter if the child's ear. Adjust the headband so that it sits comfortably over the top of the head. Sunglasses, reading glasses and thick hair can reduce the performance and fit of ear muffs. What does NRR and SNR stand for and what do they mean? NRR stands for Noise Reduction Rating, and SNR stands for Single Noise Ratio. Basically, these two ratings are used to give a measurement of the average decibel attenuation ( lowering of the noise level ) over a range of specified frequencies. They are calculated slightly different and because of this the SNR rating will come out higher than the NNR rating. Will my child be able to hear anything with the ear muffs on? Yes, your child will still be able to hear, this is important to their safety, however the dangerous levels of noice will be reduced. The less noise the child is exposed to, the less noise the ear muffs will let through. This also applies to ear plugs. What options are there for a newborn baby? Unfortunately there just isnt any hearing protection designed with a newborn baby in mind. Although we recommend our ear muffs for babies from 6 months, they will also fit a lot of younger babies too. A lot of parents have successfully used our ear muffs on babies as young as 6 weeks old. It is ok for the headband to extend above the top of the head, just as long as the ear cups seal around the full perimeter of the ear. What do the letters printed on the earmuffs refer to? The letters printed on the side of the earmuffs refer to various international safety standards: ANSI S3.19 - The American National Standards Institute is a private, nonprofit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. Equivalent Australian companies include SAI Global and Standards Australia. S3.19 is the standard introduced by the ANSI to regulate hearing protection devices. Em's For Kids meet these requirements. EN352-1: 1993 - This is the European Standard for hearing protection and hearing protectors, as well as protective clothing and other safety measures. Em's For Kids also meet this standard. Information on Hearing Loss - Education is the Key Banz earmuffs were developed because Baby BanZ believes hearing is precious and something that needs to be protected. Children should be taught the dangers of noise exposure and instructed to use ear protection when necessary. We believe that if you can teach children from a young age that their hearing is precious, and you protect them from becoming accustomed to excessively loud noises, they will be more likely to look after their hearing as they move into their teenage years. More than a third of all hearing loss is attributed to noise: loud music, loud workplaces, loud recreational equipment, due to these things people are losing their hearing at a younger age than they were 30 years ago. Banz Ear muffs are designed to protect young children from noise-induced hearing loss. What is noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL)? Noise-induced hearing loss is essentially that loss of hearing that is caused by exposure to loud noises. When exposed to loud noise the tiny hairs inside the ear (more specifically the cochlea) are damaged. These hairs can repair themselves if only a small amount of damage is done, however over time repeated exposure to loud noise can cause permanent damage. What can cause noise-induced hearing loss? NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense impulse sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time, such as noise generated in a woodworking shop. The loudness of sound is measured in units called decibels. For example, the humming of a refrigerator is 40 decibels, normal conversation is approximately 60 decibels, and city traffic noise can be 85 decibels. Sources of noise that can cause NIHL include motorcycles, firecrackers, and small firearms, all emitting sounds from 120 to 150 decibels. Long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. The louder the sound, the shorter the time period before NIHL can occur. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss. Below is a table that outlines different noisy activities and the exposure times until hearing damage. Activity Average decibels Exposure time until hearing damage Gunshot 165db Immediate Rocket launch 180db Immediate Power tools 100db 15 minutes Speedboat 110db 2 minutes Lawnmower 90db 2 hours Personal stereo system on max level 105db 4 minutes Chainsaw 110db 2 minutes Jackhammer 120db 15 seconds Average Rock concert 110db 2 minutes Chainsaw 110db 2 minutes Firecrackers 140db Immediate Who is affected by NIHL? People of all ages, including children, teens, young adults and older people, can develop NIHL. Exposure occurs in the workplace, in recreational settings and at home. Recreational activities that can put someone at risk of NIHL include target shooting and hunting, woodworking, listening to or playing loud music and other hobbies. Harmful noises at home can come from music, lawnmowers, leafblowers and other power tools. Can NIHL be prevented? NIHL is 100 percent preventable. All individuals should understand the hazards of noise and how to practice good hearing health in everyday life. To protect your hearing: Know which noises can cause damage (those at or above 85 decibels). Wear earplugs or other hearing protective devices when involved in a loud activity Be alert to hazardous noise in the environment. Protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own. Make family, friends, and colleagues aware of the hazards of noise. If you suspect hearing loss, have a medical examination by an otolaryngologist (a physician who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose, throat, head, and neck) and a hearing test by an audiologist (a health professional trained to measure and help individuals deal with hearing loss). Reviews from Baby Banz Ear Muff Customers: November 16, 2009 Michael Atkin from Henderson, NV United States "We purchased the infant/toddler ear muffs for our one year old. We got them for our son, as we like to go to military air shows. I can attest that these are the absolute best product out there. We are so happy with the quality, and durability of the ear protection. Our baby slept through a Blue Angel demonstration as well as a Thunderbird show. As jets are flying low and screaming by, he slept comfortably with the ear muffs on, not affected by any noise. As all the other babies are crying because they are scared, or have adult size ear protection or even worse, their parents hands covering their ears, I just an so relieved we have these earmuffs! This is a wonderful product and I am so glad to have found it! We also have purchased the sunglasses for our infant. We are equally pleased with the sunglasses. Thanks for making such great products! " May 26, 2009 Donna LeTendre from Elkton , MD United States "I bought these for my 8 year old son. He has sensory difficulties, including hearing. His O. T. suggested we get him earmuffs. It took me hours to find these. I wanted them to look like they were for kids. The adult ones I found were rather ugly. It is wonderful that my children can wear these in class and can clearly hear what the teacher is saying. My son was adamant that he would not wear Ear muffs when anyone was around. He was so afraid everyone would make fun of him. Now he wears them in class and is not self conscious at all. All the kids in class want them too! ! He gets to go to the movies for the first time in his life without feeling pain! ! Thank-you for a great product! ! ! I would recommend these to any one who has a child in their life with Hearing Sensory difficulties. My sons O. T. is thrilled with them! She will be recommending these for her patients. I am online now to buy another set for my 10 year old. He has a hard time focusing and gets very distracted. " Finally! Kids hearing protection!
